LAS VEGAS - The seeds were falling quickly at the sixth annual Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships and host UNLV saw all three of its singles entries ousted from the main draw Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Only two of the eight seeded players made it through both rounds on day one and the upset victims included Lady Rebel star Elena Gantcheva. The 30th-ranked and sixth-seeded senior won her first match, 6-2, 6-3 over Anna Powaska of Oregon but then lost to Stanford's Whitney Deason in a close 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 meeting in the round of 16.
Kristina Nedeltcheva also won her first rounder, 7-6, 7-5 over Micaela Hein of Arizona State, before falling to third-seeded Jessica Nguyen of Stanford 6-3, 6-2.
Katy Williams lost in the first round to Stanford's Celia Durkin 6-1, 6-2. Two UNLV players still remain in flight two, however. Anna Maskaljun won 7-5, 6-4 over Mimi Songsermsawas of Oregon 7-5, 6-4 and Nikol Dimitrova swept ASU's Amanda Martin 6-2, 6-2.
Gantcheva is still alive in doubles play as she and partner Nedeltcheva outlasted Oregon's Ana Olivos and Carmen Serementa 9-7 to advance. Action resumes Saturday with a round of doubles beginning at 10 a.m. That will be followed by two rounds of singles. The finals are set for Sunday. Admission to all matches is free.
