BOISE, Idaho - The 70th-ranked UNLV men's tennis team opened the semester by playing at No. 22 Boise State in the ITA Mountain Region Team Playoff and was dispatched by the host at the Boas Tennis Complex Saturday.
Playing indoors, Boise State (3-0) won all four completed singles matches to advance with a 4-0 victory behind a powerful lineup that boasts four ranked individuals.
The Rebels (0-1), who were missing senior starter David Campbell in the lineup, were eliminated and now return to prepare for their regular-season dual-match opener vs. Southern Mississippi on Feb. 1. UNLV fell to 0-3 all-time in ITA team playoff action - all of which has come against the Broncos on their home courts.
BSU's 47th-ranked Luke Shields won at the top spot 6-1, 6-4 over Elliot Wronski while No. 19 Clancy Shields blew by Wesley Burrows on court two, 6-1, 6-2. Piotr Dilaj swept Bryan Miller 6-2, 6-1 on court four and 65th-ranked Eric Robertson defeated Matt Kunkel 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 5 position.
The remaining two matches were halted when the Broncos clinched the team match.
"It was good to see everyone compete well today against the best Boise State team we've ever faced," UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "We can take some positives from this match and I'm really excited about our group of players as we move into the season."
