LAS VEGAS - The No. 8 UNLV men's golf team is in fourth place after rounds of 2-over-par 282 and 4-under 276, respectively, during the first day of play on Monday at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, which is being played at Old Overton Club (par 70, 6,934 yards) in Birmingham, Ala.
SMU shot rounds of 2-under 278 and 11-under 269 to lead the 12-team field by two shots at 13-under 547. Host and defending champion Alabama is two shots back at 11-under after rounds of 278 and 271, respectively. Auburn is third at 5-under (287-268), while the Rebels are 11 shots back at 2-under 558. North Carolina is the only other team under par and rounds out the top five at 1-under.
Auburn's Glenn Northcutt shot rounds of 1-under 69 and 6-under 64 to lead the tournament by one shot at 7-under 133. Alabama's Hunter Hamrick (70-64) is second at 6-under and there is a four-way tie for third at 5-under.
UNLV junior Eddie Olson leads all Rebel players after shooting 4-under 66 and even-par 70, and is tied for seventh at 4-under 136. Junior Brett Kanda (72-65) is tied for ninth at 3-under 137.
Rebel freshman Derek Ernst (69-70) is tied for 15th at 1-under, senior Seung-Su Han (76-71) is tied for 46th at 7-over and freshman Colby Smith (75-78) is 57th at 13-over.
The tournament will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday.
