LAS VEGAS - UNLV's contingent won six out of eight total matches on Friday to complete an improved second day at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Women's West Regional Championships, which run through Monday at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
Two Lady Rebel duos are still alive in the doubles main draw and moved into Saturday's Round of 16. Ninth-seeded Kristina Nedeltcheva and Katy Williams won 8-1 over San Diego State's Olivia Colman and Kathryn Kitts while Anna Maskaljun and Alisa Razina stunned fifth-seeded Leyla Entekhabi and Sarah Fansler of USC 8-6.
In the main draw of singles, Nikol Dimitrova was paired against second-seeded Amanda Fink of USC and lost 6-4, 6-1. The Lady Rebels were perfect in the consolation draw, however. Katy Williams swept Estelle LaPorte of Loyola Marymount 6-3, 6-0 and then rolled past Tova Hausman of UC Santa Barbara 6-0, 6-3. Anna Maskaljun downed Milou Teeling of USD 6-1, 6-4 and then used a super-tiebreaker to fight off Milana Yusupov of SDSU 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (10-8).
"Today was a solid day for UNLV," said head coach Kevin Cory. "Winning two main draw doubles matches, including upsetting the five seed, shows how strong our doubles are right now. Also, going 4-1 in singles was a great way to bounce back from the first day."
No less than 17 Wilson/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women are taking place over the last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the November 6-9 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Virginia.
