LAS VEGAS - UNLV sophomore Kier Maitland was named Mountain West Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday. Maitland is the third Rebel this season to be honored, and its the first in his career.
A native of Edmonton, Alberta, Maitland lead UNLV to the 2008 UC Irvine/Nike Cup team title after a stellar three-day performance. He won the 500 free in a time of 4:25.45, and took second in the 1650 free in 15:19.07, behind teammate John Mendoza. Both times are NCAA 'B' times, and he's ranked first in the MWC in the 500, second in the 1650 free. Maitland also posted a second-place time in the 200 free (1:39.79), and led off UNLV's 800 free relay, which finished first in 6:42.12.
The Rebels have the next few weeks off, before returning to action on Saturday, Dec. 13, with a dual meet at UC Irvine at 2 pm.
