LAS VEGAS - The 40th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team improved to 5-0 at home this season with a dominating 6-1 victory over No. 61 Oklahoma State on a gorgeous Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Lady Rebels improved to 6-1 overall on the season while the Cowgirls fell to 4-2.
UNLV began the morning by sweeping three doubles matches for one team point. Elena Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva won 8-4 at the top spot; Katy Williams and Anna Maskaljun won 8-2 at No. 2; and Alisa Razina and Nikol Dimitrova won 8-3 on court three.
Four Lady Rebels won in straight sets in singles play to clinch the match. In a battle of ranked players at the top, No. 30 Gantcheva had no trouble with No. 70 Iryna Tkachenko 6-1, 6-4. The super senior improved her season singles record to 16-6, including 6-0 in duals, and is now just one victory away from becoming just the third Lady Rebel in history to reach the 100-win plateau in a career (99-32).
Nedeltcheva won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2; Williams used a super-tiebreaker to win 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (10-2) at No. 3; Maskaljan improved her impressive freshman record to 14-3 overall by winning 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5; and Adrienn Hidvegi won on court six by the score of 6-3, 6-1.
"Today was a tough match vs. a perennially ranked Big 12 Conference opponent," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "I thought the girls came to play today and the scores indicated that. This will give us a lot of momentum going into one of our biggest weekends of the season."
UNLV will now ready to host three straight non-conference matchups vs. highly ranked opponents, beginning with No. 28 Texas A&M on Friday at 10 a.m. No. 12 Fresno State comes to town on Saturday and No. 33 Florida International closes the action on Sunday. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
