LAS VEGAS - In the first-ever meeting between the two programs, the 42nd-ranked UNLV women's tennis team lost 7-0 to No. 16 Florida State at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Wednesday.
The Lady Rebels, who are currently competing without their No. 2 doubles/No. 3 singles player Katy Williams because of injury, fell to 8-4 overall on the season while the surging Seminoles improved to 11-2.
FSU began the afternoon by taking a hotly contested doubles point for a 1-0 lead. UNLV's lone win came at the top spot where Elena Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva won 8-0.
In a match that was much closer than the final score indicated, half of the singles lineup went to three sets but the visitors took all of them.
In a battle of ranked players at the top, No. 73 Lauren Macfarlane used a super-tiebreaker to upset No. 28 Gantcheva 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7). Also losing in three sets was Anna Maskaljun at No. 4, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, and Sharon Marin on court six, 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6).
UNLV will now look to rebound when it hosts No. 38 Virginia Commonwealth on Friday beginning with doubles at 10 a.m. Admission is free of charge.
