PROVO, Utah - Playing a neutral-site Mountain West Conference matchup, the UNLV men's tennis team closed its regular-season schedule with a 4-2 upset of No. 54 San Diego State on Saturday at BYU's Indoor Tennis Courts.
The Rebels improved to 10-11 overall and 3-3 in league play while the Aztecs fell to 12-11 and 1-5.
Playing a staggered schedule after being forced indoors, UNLV lost all three doubles matches in close fashion to fall behind 1-0.
In singles play, the Rebels got a quick win from Wesley Burrows at No. 3, 6-0, 6-2 over Achim Ceban, to tie the match. After SDSU went ahead with a victory on court four, No. 85 Elliot Wronski rallied past Matan Shitrit 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at the top of the lineup. Luca Barlocchi then got past Bartosz Golas 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 2 and Rony Yeghnazary clinched the victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5 over Jordan Colman.
"Everyone fought hard after losing a close doubles point," UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "I'm very proud of the team and the way we ended the regular season on a high note. It's a nice way to head into now defending our conference tournament championship."
UNLV will await word on seeding for the annual MWC Championship, which is set for April 24-26 on the campus of TCU in Fort Worth, Texas.
