IRVINE, Calif. - The UNLV men's tennis team closed out its non-conference schedule by upsetting 66th-ranked UC Irvine 5-2 at Anteater Stadium Saturday afternoon.
In what was a rematch of former Big West Conference rivals, the Rebels evened their overall record at 9-9 while the Anteaters fell to 8-11.
UNLV began the afternoon by taking two of three doubles matches for one team point. The duo of Elliot Wronski and Wesley Burrows won 8-4 at the top position while David Campbell and Luca Barlocchi won by the same score on court two.
In singles play, the visitors were competitive on every court. Wronski, ranked 85th, swept Alex Sundling 7-5, 6-3 at the top of the lineup. Barlocchi upset No. 111 Victor Lamm at No. 2 by the score of 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. Rony Yeghnazary gutted out a 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 win over Zac Tsai at No. 5 and Bryan Miller won 7-5, 6-3 over Stephen Stege on court six.
"It's a good feeling to get our first road win of the season, especially against a ranked opponent." UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "Every match was close and it was nice to see the bottom of our lineup step up and get wins, which we'll need when we get back into conference play."
UNLV begins its final regular-season road swing on Thursday when it faces Mountain West rival New Mexico in Provo, Utah.
