June 19, 2008

LAS VEGAS -

The 2008 Mountain West Conference Tournament Champion UNLV women's tennis team set a program-record in the classroom as six of its players earned a spot on the 2008 Academic All-MWC Team, which was released Thursday.

The Lady Rebel contingent also ranked second in the league, bested only by New Mexico's eight honorees. Leading the way for UNLV was a pair of three-time honorees: seniors Elena Gantcheva and Sharon Marin. Gantcheva, the league's first-ever three-time women's tennis player of the year, boasted a 3.48 grade point average in hospitality management. Marin held a 3.30 in international business.

Also making a repeat appearance was sophomore Alisa Razina. Katy Williams, who transferred in for her junior season, sophomore Kristina Nedeltcheva and freshman Anna Maskaljun all made their first appearance on the list. To be eligible for selection, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and be a starter or significant contributor.
