SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The UNLV women's cross country team turned in a strong season-opening performance at the UC-San Diego Quad meet, finishing third overall as team on Friday afternoon.

The Rebels accumulated 69 total team points and senior Jenni Shearer finished the 2.5-mile Triton Course in a time of 15:39.6 to finish second individually. Overall the Rebels had three runners finish in the top 10, as Ashley Silva came in seventh with a time of 15:53.7 and Isabelle Stoate was 10th with a time of 16:12.70.

"This was a good start to the season and it's probably the best start since I've been at UNLV," said head coach Tony Houchin. "We've got a lot of work to do between now and the end of the season but I think we're heading in the direction."

Host UCSD finished first as a team with 39 points, followed by the University of San Diego with 51, the Rebels and then Point Loma Nazarene with 72 points. Bre Schofield of UCSD won the individual title with a time of 15:17.4.

Bailey Kuestermeyer, a senior who is also a member of the Rebel swim team, finished 33rd with a time of 17:21.5, Brett Zorich came in 42nd with a time of 17:39.0, Erin Murphy was 46th with a time of 17:47.1 and Amber Throop was 51st with a time of 18:35.0.
