LAS VEGAS - The contingent from host UNLV won three singles matches and was 2-0 in doubles action to open play at the seventh annual Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Friday.

Top Lady Rebel singles player Kristina Nedeltcheva began her semester in impressive fashion by upsetting 107th-ranked Carmen Seremeta of Oregon 6-2, 7-6 in the first round. During the Round of 16, however, the junior from Sofia, Bulgaria, fell to 32nd-ranked Csilla Borsanyi of Baylor.

Three UNLV players, however, remain alive in Flight Two: senior Katy Williams, who downed Trudie du Toit of Oregon 6-3, 6-4; sophomore Anna Maskaljun, who won 6-1, 7-6 over Ashlee Brown of Arizona State; and Andrienn Hidvegi, who swept Florida's Barbara Pinterova 6-4, 7-5.

Also, Nedeltcheva and Williams advanced in the top flight of doubles with a 9-7 victory over Stanford's Carolyn McVeigh and Courtney Clayton, and will now face the event's top seeded duo from Fresno State in the Saturday's quarterfinals. Hidvegi and Nikol Dimitrova won their Flight Two match 8-4 over Pavlina Smatova and Madelie Janse van Rensburg of Oregon. A third Lady Rebel duo, Maskaljun and Alisa Razina, enjoyed a bye and will compete on Saturday.

"It was a solid effort from the Rebels," said UNLV head coach Kevin Cory. "We earned two great doubles wins to start the day, Kristina got a ranked win and then we had three players in the second flight win in straight sets, which was impressive."

Players from 11 of the elite college programs in the United States, including the defending NCAA singles champion, have gathered on campus for what is one of the game's top individual tournaments each season. Action begins with doubles each day at 10 a.m. PST with the finals scheduled for Sunday. Admission to all matches is free.
