VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. - After Monday's scheduled 36-holes were cancelled because of heavy rain at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, the No. 13 UNLV men's golf team shot even-par 280 on Tuesday and finished in a tie for third place.
Tuesday's 18-hole round made up the entire tournament, which was played at Old Overton Club (par 70, 7,204 yards) and won by host Alabama, which fired a 7-under 273. Texas finished second, three shots back at 4-under 276. The Rebels tied with East Tennessee State in third, while the fifth-place spot was held by Louisville at 1-over. The field was made up of 12 teams.
Alabama's Hunter Hamrick took tournament medalist honors with a 5-under 65, beating Texas' Cody Gribble by one shot. UNLV sophomore Derek Ernst paced the Rebels for the fourth straight tournament, finishing third at 3-under. There was a seven-way tie for fourth at 2-under.
Other Rebel players: senior Brett Kanda tied for 16th with an even-par 70, freshman Kevin Penner tied for 20th at 1-over, sophomore Colby Smith tied for 29th at 2-over and senior Eddie Olson tied for 50th at 6-over.
UNLV will play in its final tournament of the fall, Oct. 26-27, at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M.
