LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's tennis program continued its torrid play early Thursday and then cooled down a bit to close day two at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Championships at the Stacy Darling Tennis Center.
The Lady Rebels stormed out in the morning round, winning five of six singles matches and three of four doubles contests. However, moving to the Round of 16 in singles, only senior leader Kristina Nedeltcheva survived. Ranked 90th in the nation, the second seed rolled past Colorado State's top player, Laura Neal, 6-0, 6-3 and then was forced to oust her UNLV teammate, Adrienn Hidvegi, by the score of 6-1, 6-1 to advance to Friday's quarterfinals.
Along with Hidvegi, three other Lady Rebels won their first effort of the day before bowing out. Jana Albers (seeded 17-26) upset Colorado's 9-16 seed Monica Milewski 6-4, 6-0 but then fell to the event's top seed, Boise State's Pichittra, 6-3, 6-0. Anna Maskaljun held off Sophia Marks of New Mexico State 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 before losing to fourth-seeded Kristina Doerr of BYU 6-1, 6-3. Nives Pavlovic, seeded 9-16, got by Boise State's Rocio Frej 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 but then lost a heartbreaker to eighth-seeded Ute Schnoy of Denver, 5-7, 7-6, 6-4.
In doubles, UNLV was nearly perfect again in one round of action. Top duo Nedeltcheva and Albers, seeded fourth, nipped Paige Miles and Anastasia Putilina of Utah 9-8 to move into tomorrow's Round of 16. Joining them will be Hidvegi and Pavlovic, who knocked off sixth-seeded Doerr and Romina Nedakovic of BYU 8-6, and Masakaljun and Alisa Razina, who upset 9-13 seed Julia Bauregger and Schnoy of Denver 8-2.
The only Lady Rebel playing consolation singles, Ella Bourchier, won her first match of the day before being eliminated.
"We started out really well in doubles and that translated into success in the first round of singles," said UNLV head coach Kevin Cory. "Kristina is playing really well and we're looking for a big day tomorrow."
Wilson/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women are taking place this month at sites throughout the country. Both the singles and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the November 5-8 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by Yale University in New Haven, Conn.
