Rebels Sweep MWC Weekly Honors

Feb. 3, 2009

LAS VEGAS - UNLV swimmers swept the Mountain West Conference weekly honors this week, as Kier Maitland was named Men's Swimmer of the Week, while Zsuzsanna Jakabos was the Women's Swimmer of the Week the league office announced on Tuesday. It was the second honor of the season for both Rebels.

Maitland, a sophomore and native of Edmonton, Alberta, won both distance events this past Saturday to help the Rebels post a 169-93 victory over UC Santa Barbara, which gave the men's team a record 11th victory of the season (11-1). He won the 500 free in a time of 4:29.20, while his winning swim of 9:18.66 in the 1000 free is the fastest in the MWC this season.

Jakabos, a freshman and native of Pecs, Hungary, broke the oldest record in the UNLV record book as she won the 400 IM in a time of 4:18.46, just .09 away from the conference mark. Her time broke the previous UNLV record of 4:19.51, set by Wendy Meyers in the 1987-88 season. Jakabos also set a school record in the 200 fly (2:01.05), and won the 500 free as well (5:00.93).

The UNLV men are off until the MWC Championships at the end of the month, while the women's squad returns to action on Saturday, with a meet at New Mexico in Albuquerque.
