March 17, 2009

LAS VEGAS - UNLV is looking to score at the national championships for the first time in eight years as its sending two athletes to this week's 2009 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. This year's championship is being held from Thursday through Saturday at Texas A&M's Student Rec Center Natatorium in College Station, Texas.

Freshman Zsuszanna Jakabos, the MWC Swimmer of the Year, and senior Amanda Weinbrecht will be representing the Rebels at the NCAA championships. Jakabos, who set two MWC records at last month's conference championship meet, will swim three individual events this week. She is ranked seventh in the nation in the 400 IM coming into this week, an event she will swim on Friday. Jakabos will begin the meet on Thursday in the 200 IM, in which she is 31st, and will conclude her events on Saturday in the 200 fly, where she is ranked 20th in the field.

Weinbrecht meanwhile will first see action on Friday when she competes in both the 100 fly and the 100 back. She is ranked 38th in the 100 fly and 39th in the 100 back. Her final event will be on Saturday, the 200 back in which she is ranked 45th.
