Final Stats
LONG BEACH, Calif. - UNLV baseball was held to two hits on the afternoon in a 4-0 defeat to Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon in the second of a three-game series between the two teams at Blair Field.
Rebel senior J.J. Sferra singled in the fourth inning, but that would be the only base knock that LBSU starter Jake Thompson would give up in his eight innings of work. With the defeat UNLV fell to 13-12 on the year, with Tanner Peters (3-2) taking the loss, as he gave up the four runs on nine hits in seven innings on the mound.
Thompson's strong outing helped LBSU improve to 9-12 on the year, and Jason Markovitz gave up the other UNLV hit, a single to Ryan Thornton that moved Chad Claus, who drew a walk to start the ninth, to second. Markovitz got a double-play ground ball and then another ground out to end the game.
Despite the Rebels' lack of offense, they were in the game behind the pitching of Peters, who through five innings had given up just a single run in the bottom of the fourth. But the Dirtbags broke the game open in the sixth, scoring three runs in the frame on an infield single, a sacrifice bunt and then another run-scoring single to go up 4-0.
UNLV and Long Beach State wrap up their series tomorrow, with the first pitch between the two teams slated for 1:00 p.m. (PT).
