Women's Track & Field

Last Trip To California For Rebels

May 1, 2009

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's track and field team will wrap up the regular outdoor season this weekend as they head to the Asics/Steve Scott Invitational in Irvine, Calif.

The Asics/Steve Scott Invitational will take place on the campus of UC Irvine at the Anteater Track Stadium, and the Rebels will compete against teams that include host UC Irvine, CSU Fullerton, Oklahoma, Hawaii, Long Beach State and Mountain West Conference opponent San Diego State.

"This is our last competition before the Mountain West Conference Championships and it is a great opportunity for us to get out all the kinks and gain some confidence before we leave for Wyoming," said head coach Yvonne Scott-Williams. "Our goal is still to reach peak performance at the championships, so we are preparing for that."

Key athletes to watch heading into this weekend include Candise Maxwell in the 100 meter hurdles, and Lekeisha Lawson and Shahnel Woodley, who will both be running in the 100 and 200 meter events. Jennifer Shearer will run in the 1,500 and 5,000 meter run. Leah Maurer will compete in the javelin throw for the second time this season and Christine Lowe will run the 400-meter hurdles for UNLV.

The Rebels have three athletes and a relay team that has already qualified for the NCAA West Regional, and they are Lawson in the 100, Maxwell in the 100-meter hurdles and Christine Lowe in the 400-meter hurdles. UNLV's 4x100 meter relay team has also qualified, and the group has turned in the second-fastest time in the MWC, clocking a 45.49 at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational last weekend
