ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The UNLV men's golf team shot an opening round 6-under-par 282 and was 10-under during the second round as a lightning delay halted play late Friday afternoon at the 17-team, 55th Annual William H. Tucker Invitational. The tournament is being played at the University of New Mexico's Championship Course (par 72, 7,562 yards).
The Rebels were at 16-under for the day when play was suspended, seven shots ahead of second-place San Diego State. The Aztecs were 9-under for the day after an opening-round 3-over 291. Pepperdine and Baylor are tied for third at 2-under, while Texas A&M round out the top five teams at even par.
Air Force's Tom Whitney holds the individual lead at 10-under through 12 holes in the second round. He shot an opening-round 3-under 69. The Rebels were led by Derek Ernst, who is in a two-way tie for second place at 7-under through 15 holes in the second round. Ernst shot 5-under 67 in the morning. Rebel teammate Colby Smith is also in the top five as he in a three-way tie for fourth place at 6-under through 12 holes after shooting 1-over in the morning session.
Other Rebel players: Brett Kanda is tied for 10th at 2-under through 13 holes (shot 70 during first round), Kevin Penner is tied for 15th at 1-under through 12 (shot 72 during first round), Eddie Olson is tied for 21st at 1-over through 11 (shot 73 during first round), Jeremiah Wooding, who is competing as an individual, is tied for 41st at 3-over through 12 (shot 72 during first round) and Jordan Epstein is 104th at 16-over through 13 (shot 79 during first round).
