FULLERTON, Calif. - UNLV cross country opened its 2009 season with a 13th-place finish at the 25th annual Fullerton Invitational, which was hosted by Cal State Fullerton on Saturday night at the Fullerton golf course.
The Rebels were led by the duo of Shannon Simpson and Lucy Beuster, who finished 78th and 79th with times of 25:24.40 and 25:25.40 respectively on the 6k course that was predominately flat, with some rolling sections on what were the front nine holes. Overall four Rebels finished in the top 100 and the squad accumulated 382 points.
UNLV was part of a 26 team field, and Azusa Pacific earned the team title with 53 points, followed by Long Beach State and then Glendale College. Jacky Kipwambok of Azusa Pacific took home individual honors, finishing with a time of 21:24.20.
The rest of the Rebel top five included Lexie Bravo (86th, 25:34.10), Courtney Allen (89th, 25:36.90) and Bailey Kuestermeyer (102nd, 25:52.00). Amber Throop (112th, 26:03.50), Ali Motor (116th, 26:06.40), Lauren Petersen (185th, 28:07.10), Amaris Williams (205th, 28:58.60), Samantha Swan (220 th, 29:48.60) and Brandie Pena (248th, 32:20.10) rounded out the UNLV lineup.
UNLV is off next weekend and then will run at UC Riverside on Sept. 19.
