LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team will head to Vestavia Hills, Ala., for the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, which will be played Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 11-12, at Old Overton Golf Club (par 70, 7,204 yards).
The 12-team field includes (Golf World/NIKE Golf Coaches' Poll ranking in parenthesis): host Alabama (4), Auburn (15), Florida (2), Georgia State, Memphis, Mississippi State, Samford, SMU, Southern Miss, South Alabama, UAB and UNLV (receiving votes). The 54-hole stroke-play tournament will consist of 36 holes (first and second rounds) on Monday and 18 holes (final round) on Tuesday.
Scheduled to compete for UNLV are: senior Jeremiah Wooding, junior Derek Ernst, sophomore Kevin Penner and freshmen Blake Biddle and Nicholas Maruri.
Alabama is the four-time defending JPNI team champion. Individually, an Alabama golfer has won medalist or co-medalist honors in three of the last four years. Last year's tournament was shortened to just one round because of rain. Alabama won the team title with a score of 7-under 273, while the Crimson Tide's Hunter Hamrick captured the individual title by a stroke with a 5-under 65.
Last year at the JPNI, UNLV finished tied for third, seven shots back at even-par 280. Ernst led the Rebels last year with a third-place finish at the event at 3-under 67, two shots back.
Live scoring of the JPNI will be available courtesy of Golfstat.com through a link at UNLVRebels.com. This will be UNLV's third tournament of the fall. The Rebels finished fifth at the Gene Miranda Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo., and then 12th at the PING/Golfweek Preview in Stillwater, Okla., both in September.
