LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - With a major rainstorm visiting the Las Vegas Valley on Wednesday, there was an abbreviated workload at the first day of the 2010 USTA/ITA Mountain Region Championships, which are being held at the Amanda & Stacy Darling Memorial Tennis Center.
All but one Rebel was able to complete his first-round match but no second-round finals were recorded. While top-seeded Mehdi Bouras enjoyed a bye along with teammate Johannes Markel, UNLV singles players went 3-2. Transfer Kyle Lynch downed Boise State's Michael Gilliland 6-1, 1-6, 6-2; Alex Bull swept Air Force's Steven Young 6-2, 7-5; and Bernard Schoeman downed Montana State's Alberto Fuentes 6-0, 6-4.
In doubles, two Rebel duos earned byes while two other pairings lost their first-round matches.
The tournament runs through Sunday. Thursday is scheduled to get under way with doubles play at 9 a.m. PT.
This event is one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over the last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions from the regionals will advance to the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 4-7, at the new indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
