LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - A trio of UNLV players, including top-seeded Mehdi Bouras, is still alive after day two on Thursday at the 2010 USTA/ITA Mountain Region Championships, which are being held at the Amanda & Stacy Darling Memorial Tennis Center.
Bouras, ranked 103rd nationally, made quick work of New Mexico's Joe Wood 6-3, 6-3 in the second round. Also advancing was Kyle Lynch, who swept Utah State's Jacob Asplund 6-4, 6-3; and Johannes Markel, who held off Montana State's Pawel Turzanski 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. UNLV also picked up a pair of wins in the singles consolation bracket.
In doubles play, the program's final remaining duo in the main draw, Bouras and Kasper Konyves, won its first match of the day, downing Dymtro Mamedov and Gino Octa of Utah, 8-5; but later fell in the Round of 16.
The tournament runs through Sunday. Friday is scheduled to get under way with doubles play at 9 a.m. PT, which will be followed by two rounds of singles.
This event is one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over the last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions from the regionals will advance to the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 4-7, at the new indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
