LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Top-seeded Mehdi Bouras of UNLV won his morning match Saturday but later was upset in the quarterfinals of 2010 USTA/ITA Mountain Region Championships, which are being held at the Amanda & Stacy Darling Memorial Tennis Center.
Bouras, ranked 103rd nationally, rallied past Jens Vorkefield of Denver in the Round of 16, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, but then fell to 11th-seeded Enej Bonin, also of DU, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4.
UNLV did enjoy success in a final round of consolation singles action on Saturday as all three Rebels won in straight sets to close the program's efforts at the massive tournament. Alex Bull downed Idaho's Abid Akbar 6-4, 6-4; Rene Ruegamer knocked off 25th-seeded Conor Berg of New Mexico, 6-2, 6-4; and newcomer Kyle Lynch continued his strong play with a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Weber State's Dave Hintze.
This event is one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over the last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions from the regionals will advance to the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 4-7, at the new indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
UNLV will close out its fall tournament schedule by hosting the Larry Easley Memorial Classic next weekend.
