LAS CRUCES, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team shot a final-round 2-under-par 282 and finished in second place, just one shot back, at the 15-team Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, which was played at New Mexico State University Golf Course (par 71, 6,999 yards) on Tuesday.
The Rebels finished the tournament with a 54-hole total of 7-over 859. Kansas used a final-round low score of 11-under 273 to claim the team title by a stroke at 6-over 858. Host New Mexico State finished third at 12-over after shooting 6-over on Tuesday, while Washington State was fourth at 13-over and Idaho finished fifth at 15-over.
UNLV's second place finish marked its best of the fall season. In three of their first four tournaments this season, the Rebels have finished in fifth place or better.
Individually, the Rebels were led by freshman Blake Biddle, who shot a final-round 2-under 69 to tie for third place at 3-under 210. It was Biddle's best finish of his young career - his previous high finish was a tie for 21st at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate. Junior Derek Ernst also turned in a top-five finish on Tuesday as he tied for fifth at 2-under 211, also after a final-round 69.
New Mexico State's Timothy Madigan and Idaho's Matt Rawitzer both earned co-medalist honors, beating the field by two shots at 5-under 208. Madigan carded a final-round 1-over 72, while Rawitzer was 1-under on Tuesday. Madigan and Ernst earned co-medalist honors at last year's event.
Other Rebels: Junior Colby Smith tied for 18th at 6-over 219 after a final-round 75, senior Jeremiah Wooding tied for 47th at 12-over 225, also after a final-round 75, and freshman Karsten Majors tied for 59th after a final-round 69. There were 84 individuals in the field.
UNLV will close out its fall season Nov. 1-2 at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in Dallas, Texas.
