LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Host UNLV boasts five of the eight singles players still alive in the two flights after the first day of action Friday at the newly renamed Larry Easley Memorial Classic, which is being played at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
In Flight One, 103rd-ranked junior Mehdi Bouras enjoyed a bye and then downed Arizona's Borja Malo 6-3, 6-2 to move into Saturday's semifinals.
The entire semifinal field in Flight Two is made up of Rebels. Alex Bull downed Ben Lantz of NAU 6-1, 6-1 and then defeated Drew Jacobs of Cal Poly 6-0, 6-3. Charlie Alvarado won over Dominic Bermudez of NAU, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, and then fought off his own teammate, Kasper Konyves, 7-6, 6-4. Bernard Schoeman got by Sebastian Bell of Cal Poly 6-7, 7-5, 7-5 and went on to sweep Michael Wardell of Auburn 6-4, 6-4 later in the day. Rene Ruegamer had a first-round bye and the rallied past Jugen Dejager of Cal Poly 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
UNLV will also have two doubles team in tomorrow's quarterfinals. Bouras and Schoeman earned a bye while Bull and Ruegamer downed Lantz and Bermudez of NAU 8-2 in the day's only round.
The tournament was officially renamed the Easley Memorial Classic in honor of the Hall of Fame former Rebel head coach with an on-court ceremony that included the entire UNLV team, assorted staff and Dr. Easley's widow, Diana.
The tournament resumes at 9 a.m. on Saturday and will include two rounds of doubles along with the singles semifinals.
