Running An Oregon Trail

Nov. 12, 2010

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels will participate in the NCAA West Regional hosted by the University of Oregon in Springfield, Ore. The women's 6,000 meter race begins at 9:45 am and is followed by the men's 10,000 meter race at 10:45 am.

Springfield Country Club will host the event for the third time in the past four years. The course will be comprised entirely of grass and mostly fairways on the back nine holes along the Mohawk River. It will consist of three relatively flat loops.

UNLV will send six runners to the Pacific Northwest led by Lauren Petersen, who has paced the Rebel contingent in each race this season. Petersen will be joined by Courtney Allen, Alison Bartosch, Ali Motor, Sarah Muniz and Samantha Swan.

The NCAA West Region covers teams from the states of Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.

The race will feature four of the top-11 ranked teams in the country, all of which are from the Pac-10 conference. Stanford, the reigning Pac-10 champion, leads the way at #4 followed by #6 Arizona, #7 Oregon and #11 Washington.

The top two men's and women's teams from the NCAA West Regional automatically advance to the NCAA Championships Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind. Individual and team at-large bids will also be awarded following the nine regionals held around the nation on Saturday; those bids will be extended on Sunday.
