LAS VEGAS - The same day it returned to the national rankings, the No. 74 UNLV men's tennis team was upset 4-3 by Idaho on Friday afternoon at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels saw their five-match winning streak snapped to fall to 5-2 while the surging Vandals improved to 6-2 on the year.
The visitors took control early by emerging from an intense doubles session with a 1-0 lead. UNLV's third team, Johannes Markel and Bernard Schoeman won 8-6 at the No. 3 spot but Idaho won 8-6 at the top spot and 9-7 on court two.
In singles play, UNLV got points from the top half of its lineup. Mehdi Bouras won 6-2, 6-2 at the top position over Artem Kuznetsov; No. 102 Luca Barlocchi defeated Lachlan Reed when Reed retired in the third set; and Markel won 7-6, 7-5 over Adrian Simon at the third spot. The Vandals swept the bottom three matches, however, to clinch the victory.
UNLV returns to action Sunday when it hosts Santa Clara beginning with doubles at 10 a.m. Admission is free of charge.
