Women's Track & Field

Rebels Run In The Northwest

Feb. 13, 2010

BOISE, Idaho/SEATTLE, Wash. - UNLV women's track and field had a strong showing at two separate meets, with Rebel student-athletes earning nine top-10 finishes at the Bronco Invitational and a trio of distance runners performing well at the Husky Invitational.

At the Bronco Invitational, which was held at the Jackson Indoor Track at the Idaho Center in Nampa, Idaho, which is right outside of Boise, Kelsey Williamson and Shahnel Woodley paced the Rebels. Woodley came in fourth in the 60 meters (7.77) and added a seventh-place finish in the 200 meters (25.04), while Williamson came in third in the 400 meters (55.96) and eighth in the 200 (25.08).

UNLV freshman Emily Blok continued her strong rookie season, finishing second in the 60 meters with a time of 7.76, the highest placing by a Rebel at the indoor meet. Candise Maxwell added a fifth place in the 60-meter hurdles (8.77), and teammate Rachael Long was right behind, coming in ninth with a time of 9.26.

Deja Edwards finished third in the triple jump with a distance of 37-0.50, Stephanie Schafer added a seventh-place finish in the high jump, and Brett Zorich clocked a time of 2:23.59 in the 800 meters.

"I am pleased with how the team competed in today's meet," UNLV head coach Yvonne Scott said. "Things are starting to come together for us. We have two weeks until the indoor conference championships, so we have to take care of business."

While the majority of the team was competing in Idaho, Bailey Kuestermeyer, Sarah Muniz and Ali Motor were further west at the Husky Invitational, which was held at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle, Wash.

Kuestermeyer nearly broke the Rebel indoor record in the 5,000 meters, cruising around the track to post a time of 17:19.12 and finishing sixth overall on Friday evening. Her time, which is the second fastest on record, was less than a second behind Michele Suszek's all-time best of 17:18.57, set in 2005.

The two meets wrapped up the regular season for the Rebels, who will travel to New Mexico in two weeks for the 2010 Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships, Feb. 26-27.
