LAS VEGAS - For the second consecutive match, the No. 74 UNLV men's tennis team lost a maddeningly close doubles point to start the day. And for the second straight outing it meant a 4-3 defeat - this time at the hands of unranked Santa Clara on Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The Rebels fell to 5-3 while the experience-heavy Broncos improved to 5-2 on the year.

Santa Clara won the doubles match at No. 2, 8-5, before UNLV came back to even things when Johannes Markel and Bernard Schoeman won 9-8 on court three. The team point came down to the top spot and the Bronco duo of Kyle Dandon and Nick Vindel took the marathon match 9-8 with an 11-9 edge in the tiebreaker over Mehdi Bouras and Luca Barlocchi.

In singles play, UNLV could not match the visitors' depth in the bottom of the lineup. The Rebels got their points from Bouras, 6-4, 6-4 over Dandon at the top; No. 102 Barlocchi, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) over Brian Brogan at the second position; and Attila Toth, 7-6, 7-5 over Jay Wong on court four.

Santa Clara, however, had already won the other three matches in straight sets to secure the overall victory.

Next up, UNLV takes to the road for the first time this season with a match at UC Irvine on Friday afternoon.

"It's disappointing to lose two 4-3 matches this weekend but it did offer valuable experience for our freshmen in the lineup," said UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook. "This can only help us down the line and we're looking forward to two tough away matches next weekend."
