LAS VEGAS - The 71st-ranked UNLV men's tennis team snapped a five-match losing skid with an impressive 6-1 upset of No. 47 Hawaii on Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Enjoying playing at home for the first time since St. Valentine's Day, the Rebels evened their record at 6-6 while their former conference rivals, the Rainbow Warriors, fell to 5-4.
The morning started with the hosts taking two of three doubles matches for one team point. Mehdi Bouras and Luca Barlocchi won 8-1 at the top position while Johannes Markel and Bernard Schoeman prevailed 8-3 on court two.
In singles action, UNLV won four matches in straight sets to clinch it.
Bouras raised his sophomore singles record to 21-9 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Dennis Lajola at the top spot; Barlocchi won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2; Attila Toth won 6-1, 6-4 at No.5; and Charlie Alvarado won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6. UH got its lone point on court four but the Rebels closed with a super-tiebreaker victory, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-2) by Johannes Markel at the third position.
"It was great to get the win coming off of two tough road trips," said UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook. "The guys really wanted this one and they got the job done in both singles and doubles. I also have to mention that the crowd support today, especially from the athletics department, was just awesome and we thank everyone for coming out."
UNLV gets right back on the courts Saturday against Pacific, beginning with doubles at 10 a.m. Admission is free of charge.
