UNLV women's track and field got its outdoor schedule off to a fast start, with several Rebels posting personal bests on Saturday at the UNLV Track Classic, which was held at Myronn Partridge Stadium and Sheila Tarr-Smith Field.
It was an especially strong day on the track for the Rebels, with five athletes turning in career bests while several others finished in the top five on a mostly sunny afternoon. UNLV hosted a field that included Anchorage-Alaska, Montana State-Billings, Northern Illinois, Southern Utah, Utah Valley and Weber State, as well as several individuals who competed in the meet that featured both men's and women's athletes.
"It was a good opening meet for us," UNLV head coach Yvonne Scott said. "The competition was great for this time of year, and it was especially good to see so many people in attendance supporting the team."
UNLV freshman Kelsey Williamson ran a 55.47 in the 400 meters, finishing second and setting a personal best, while Chauncey David-Jacobs finished sixth with a time of 58.43 and Jennifer Johnson came in eighth with a time of 58.65. Johnson's time was also a personal best for the senior from Los Angeles.
Rebel junior Sarah Muniz posted the second-fastest time in school history in winning the steeplechase, clocking a 11:04.95, while senior Bailey Kuestermeyer finished second in the 1,500 meters with a personal-best time of 4:37.08. Distance runner Lucy Beuster recorded a personal-best time of 19:06.92 in the 5,000 meters to finish fourth overall in the event, and Brett Zorich finished fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:18.02.
The final personal best for the Rebels today came in the long jump pit, where freshman Ria Daniels leaped a distance of 17-1.50 to finish fifth in the event.
Other top performances on the day for the Rebels included a one-two finish in the 100 meters by Shahnel Woodley and Emily Blok, who ran near identical times of 12.07, but the edge went to Woodley. David-Jacobs added a third-place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 24.81, Candise Maxwell finished third (14.29) and Rachael Long fifth (14.52) in the 100-meter hurdles and Christine Lowe won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.38.
UNLV's "A" relay team won the 4x100 with a time of 46.64 and finished second in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:53.04.
In the field events Daniels finished fourth (33.11.50) and Carlotta Island fifth (33-7.50) in the triple jump, while Amanda Bingson came in fifth in the shot put (40-9.00) and fourth in the hammer throw (159-4.00). LaShante Ellison added a sixth-place finish in the hammer with a distance of 153-8.00 and Stephanie Schafer finished third in the high jump, clearing a height of 5-2.25.
UNLV will take next weekend off and then hit the road, traveling to California for the Trojan Classic, which is March 20 in Los Angeles, Calif.
