SALT LAKE CITY - The 58th-ranked UNLV men's tennis team saw its two-match conference winning streak snapped in heart-breaking fashion as Utah rallied for a 4-3 victory at the Liberty Park Tennis Courts on Friday afternoon.
The Rebels dropped to 12-9 overall and 2-2 in the league while the Utes improved to 7-13/2-2.
UNLV jumped out to a 1-0 lead by taking two of three doubles matches. Johannes Markel and Bernard Schoeman combined for an 8-4 win at the second position while Attila Toth and Kasper Konyves won by the same score on court three.
Utah won the first two completed singles matches to take the lead before the Rebels got victories from senior Luca Barlocchi, who downed Jason Smits 6-4, 7-6 at No. 2; and Schoeman, who rallied past Stephen Jacobs 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 at No. 5.
Trailing 3-2, the host Utes won the final two matches, both of which were three-setters.
First, Timmy Allin barely got by Toth 7-6, 1-6, 7-6 by winning both tiebreakers by the count of 9-7 at No. 4. The match ultimately came down to court six where Dmytro Mamedov held on to down Kasper Konyves 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
UNLV is right back on the courts with a visit to first-place BYU Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. PT.
