Rebels Finish Third In Provo

PROVO, Utah - The No. 11 UNLV men's golf team shot the low score of the final round on Saturday with a 10-under 278 and climbed up two spots in the standings to finish third at the PING Cougar Classic, which was played at Riverside Country Club (par 72, 7,142 yards).

The Rebels finished with a 54-hole score of 6-under 858, eight shots behind Colorado State, which won the team title with a 14-under 850 (final-round 7-under 281). Host BYU finished second at 12-under 852 (final-round 8-under 280), while Nevada, Reno finished fourth at 5-under and Augusta State rounded out the top five at the 18-team tournament at 4-under.

The third-place finish marked UNLV's seventh top-three finish in its 11 outings this season.

UNR's Jared Becher won medalist honors by two shots at 10-under 206. He shot a final-round 3-under 69. Augusta State's Patrick Reed and UNR's Scott Smith each tied for second at 8-under.

The Rebels were led individually by Derek Ernst, who shot a final-round 3-under and finished seventh at 4-under 212, six shots back of the individual champion.

Other Rebels: Kevin Penner tied for 10th at 2-under 214 after a final-round 69, Colby Smith tied for 13th at 1-under 215 after a final-round 71, Brett Kanda tied for 24th at 1-over 217 after a final-round 69 and Jeremiah Wooding tied for 63rd at 9-over 225 after a final-round 74.

UNLV's next tournament will be at the Mountain West Conference Championships in Tucson, Ariz., May 6-8.
