SAN DIEGO - The No. 12 UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 6-over-par 294 on Thursday and is in a four-way tie for first place at the 2010 NCAA Men's Golf San Diego Regional, which is being played at Carlton Oaks Golf Club (par 72, 7,360 yards).
The other three teams that also shot 294 are Oregon, California and Tennessee, and the group leads the field by just a stroke. UCF is in fifth place at 7-over, New Mexico State is sixth at 8-over and Missouri is seventh at 11-over. Augusta State and UC Irvine are both tied for eighth place at 15-over. First and last place are only separated by 13 shots.
UNLV senior Eddie Olson is atop the individual leaderboard after shooting a 4-under 68 and leads the field by one shot. New Mexico State's Timothy Madigan is in second place after shooting 3-under, while California's Michael Weaver is in third at 2-under. There is a three-way tie for fourth place at 1-under.
Other Rebel players: Derek Ernst shot 2-over and is tied for 18th, Colby Smith shot 3-over and is tied for 25th, Brett Kanda shot 5-over and is tied for 51st and Kevin Penner shot 7-over and is tied for 66th.
The low five teams and low individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championship finals.
The NCAA Regionals are made up of six 54-hole tournaments that are being conducted to determine the 30 qualifying teams and six individuals not on those qualifying teams who will advance to the finals. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams are competing at each of three regionals, including San Diego, while the other three regionals have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams.
The tournament will continue with 18 holes on Friday and conclude with another 18 holes on Saturday. UNLV is slated to begin the second round off the No. 1 hole with tee times scheduled every 10 minutes from 8:20-9:00 a.m. Live stats are available courtesy of Golfstat through a link on UNLVRebels.com.
