Rebels Finish Fifth At Season Opener

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team shot a final-round 6-over-par 294 on Monday and finished in fifth place at the season-opening Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, which was played at the Eisenhower Golf Club's Blue Course (par 72, 7,363 yards). The Rebels finished the 54-hole tournament with a score of 13-over 877, 16 shots back of the lead.

Colorado-Colorado Springs shot a final-round even-par 288 and won the team title by eight shots with a total of 3-under 861. San Diego finished second at 5-over 869, followed by Colorado State and New Mexico State, both tying for third at 7-over. The tournament featured 18 teams and 104 individuals.

Colorado State's Ryan Peterson shot a final-round 2-under 70 and won the individual title by five shots with a 9-under 207. Peterson's teammate Kory Harrell, who competed as an individual, finished second at 4-under, while there was a three-way tie for third place at 3-under.

UNLV junior Derek Ernst, a third-team All-America and the Mountain West Conference's Player of the Year last season, shot a 3-over 75 on Monday and finished tied for 12th at 1-over 217 to lead all Rebel players.

Other Rebels: senior Jeremiah Wooding and sophomore Kevin Penner both finished tied for 21st at 4-over 220. Wooding shot a final-round 74, while Penner turned in a 73. Junior Colby Smith tied for 29th at 6-over 222 after a final-round 74, while freshman Blake Biddle finished tied for 53rd at 10-over 226 after a final-round 73.

The Rebels next tournament will be the PING/Golfweek Invitational, which will be held Sept. 26-28, in Stillwater, Okla.
