STILLWATER, Okla. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV sophomore men's golfer Kevin Penner led the Rebels on Sunday at the PING/Golfweek Preview with a 2-over 74 and is in a 12-way tie for eighth place, five shots off the lead, after the first round of play at Karsten Creek Golf Club (par 72, 7,403 yards).
Oklahoma State's Talor Gooch leads all individuals by two shots after firing a 3-under 69. Augusta State's Henrik Norlander is second at 1-under 71.
Oklahoma State leads the team standings by nine shots after shooting an even-par 288 during the first round. Texas A&M is second at 9-over, Georgia Tech is third at 10-over, while Georgia, Oregon and UCLA are all tied for fourth at 12-over. The Rebels are in 13th place as a team, 33 shots back of the team leader after shooting a 33-over 321.
The Preview includes 15 teams and 75 individuals, is being played on the same course that will host the 2011 NCAA Championship this spring, and features four of the nation's top-five ranked teams, seven of the top 10 and 14 of the top 23 (Golf World/NIKE Golf Preseason Coaches' Poll).
Other Rebel players: freshman Blake Biddle is tied for 47th at 7-over 79, junior Derek Ernst is tied for 62nd at 10-over 82, senior Jeremiah Wooding is tied for 68th at 14-over 86 and junior Colby Smith is 73rd at 19-over 91.
The 54-hole tournament will continue with 18 holes on Monday and conclude with 18 more on Tuesday. Tee times begin at 8 a.m. CST on Monday and 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Oklahoma State is the two-time defending Preview team champion and has had a medalist or co-medalist in each of the last two years.
