STILLWATER, Okla. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team trimmed 18 shots off its first-round score in round two on Monday at the PING/Golfweek Preview at Karsten Creek Golf Club (par 72, 7,403 yards), with a 15-over-par 303 and moved up a spot in the standings to 12th place.
The Rebels are at 48-over 624 after 36 holes. Oklahoma State holds the team lead at 8-over 584 after a second-round 8-over 296. The Cowboys hold a one-shot lead over Georgia Tech and Georgia, which are both tied for second at 9-over. UCLA is fourth at 11-over, followed by Texas A&M in fifth at 15-over.
Georgia's Hudson Swafford is the individual leader at 1-under 143 after a second-round 4-under 68. He leads the field by two shots as there is a four-way tie for second place at 1-over.
UNLV is led by sophomore Kevin Penner, who is in a tie for 31st at 7-over 151. Penner shot a second-round 5-over 77. Other Rebel players: freshman Blake Biddle is tied for 50th at 11-over 155 after a second-round 4-over 76, junior Derek Ernst is tied for 60th at 15-over 159 after a second-round 5-over 77, junior Colby Smith is tied for 70th at 20-over 164 after a second-round 1-over 73 and senior Jeremiah Wooding is 72nd at 25-over 169 after a second-round 11-over 83.
The Preview includes 15 teams and 75 individuals, is being played on the same course that will host the 2011 NCAA Championship this spring, and features four of the nation's top-five ranked teams, seven of the top 10 and 14 of the top 23 (Golf World/NIKE Golf Preseason Coaches' Poll).
The 54-hole tournament will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. CST. Oklahoma State is the two-time defending Preview team champion and has had a medalist or co-medalist in each of the last two years.
