STILLWATER, Okla. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team shot a final-round 16-over 304 on Tuesday at the PING/Golfweek Preview at Karsten Creek Golf Club (par 72, 7,403 yards), and finished the tournament in 12th place.
The Rebels finished with a 54-hole total of 64-over 928. Oklahoma State won the team title for the third straight year with a 14-over 878 after a final-round 6-over 294. UCLA finished in second place, four shots back at 18-over, followed by Georgia in third at 19-over, and Texas A&M and Augusta State finished tied for fourth at 23-over.
UCLA's Pontus Widegren shot a final-round 3-under 69 to win medalist honors by two shots at 2-under 214. Georgia's Hudson Swafford and Oklahoma State's Peter Uihlein finished tied for second at even par.
UNLV was led by sophomore Kevin Penner, who finished in a tie for 21st at 8-over 224 after a final-round 1-over 73. Other Rebel players: freshman Blake Biddle tied for 38th at 14-over 230 after a final-round 3-over 75, junior Derek Ernst tied for 58th at 20-over 236 after a final-round 5-over 77, junior Colby Smith tied for 68th at 28-over 244 after a final-round 8-over 80 and senior Jeremiah Wooding finished 72nd at 32-over 248 after a final-round 7-over 79.
The Preview included 15 teams and 75 individuals, and was played on the same course that will host the 2011 NCAA Championship this spring. It featured four of the nation's top-five ranked teams, seven of the top 10 and 14 of the top 23 (Golf World/NIKE Golf Preseason Coaches' Poll).
UNLV's next action will be Oct. 11-12, at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala.
