LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV track and field team opens up the 2011 indoor season this weekend at New Mexico's Cherry & Silver Invitational (Jan. 21-22) in Albuquerque. The Rebels will have 22 student-athletes competing at the event hosted at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Friday's action begins at 5:00 p.m., while Saturday starts in the morning at 10:00 a.m.
Leading the UNLV contingent in the Duke City will be Amanda Bingson (weight throw and shot put), Kelsey Williamson (200m, 400m and 4x400m relay) and Emily Blok (60m, 200m and 4x400m relay).
Eight Rebels will be making their UNLV debuts this weekend: Ashley Henry (high jump), Myra Dean (high jump), Laura Affeld (600m and 800m), Secoral Yanez (200m and 400m), Taylar Mills (60m hurdles, high jump and shot put), Olivia Hudson (long jump and triple jump), Alison Bartosch (3000m) and Chelsea Cassulo (weight throw and shot put).
"This meet is the start of track season so it is a great opportunity for the team to get in the UNM facility before our indoor championships," said head coach Yvonne Scott. "We have to take advantage of every opportunity to compete against great programs."
Besides UNLV, New Mexico also welcomes Arizona, Alabama, BYU, Cal, Miami, Stanford, Northern Arizona, Portland State, Utah and New Mexico State to the two-day event.
