FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UNLVRebels.com) - The 67th-ranked UNLV men's tennis team traveled into SEC country Friday and came out with an impressive 5-2 victory over 72nd-ranked Arkansas at the Dills Indoor Tennis Stadium.
The Rebels improved to 3-1 on the season while the Razorbacks fell to 0-1.
Playing an evening match indoors in front of a hostile crowd, UNLV was forced to rally after the hosts struck first by taking the doubles point. Only Mehdi Bouras and Bernard Schoeman won for the Rebels, prevailing 8-6 at the top of the lineup over Matt Walters and Matt Hogan.
In singles play, UNLV seized momentum with a pair of straight-set wins. Rene Ruegamer downed Nikolas Zogaj 6-3, 6-2 at the fourth position and then Bouras got by Chris Nott 7-6, 6-2 at the top of the lineup to give the Rebels the lead. Johannes Markel then rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory on court two over Hogan and Schoeman finally clinched it with a 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 triumph at No. 5 over Walters. Freshman Tamas Batyi closed the scoring with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 win over Gregoire Lehmann on court three.
"I was proud of everyone for fighting back in singles after losing the doubles point," said UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook. "Arkansas is a solid, well-coached SEC team. It was a great atmosphere and they put up a tremendous fight in front of a great crowd."
UNLV remains in Fayetteville, Ark., to take on SMU Saturday before returning home.
