Men's Tennis Hosts Easley Classic

Oct. 26, 2011

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team will close out its fall season by hosting the Larry Easley Memorial Classic starting Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on campus.

Players from eight other programs will be competing in the individual event. Opponents scheduled to send competitors are Arkansas, Auburn, Fresno State, UC Irvine, Utah, San Diego State, New Mexico and NAU.

The tournament kicks off at 9 a.m. PT Friday and will be made up of one flight of doubles and two flights of singles along with consolation play in both.

Auburn's Alex Stamchev won last year's Flight One singles title while UNLV's Rene Ruegamer took the Flight Two crown. Ruegamer also teamed with Alex Bull to win the doubles championship.

The annual tournament was renamed last year in honor of UNLV Hall of Famer Larry Easley, who passed away from illness in 2005 at the age of 57. Easley coached the UNLV men's tennis team longer than anyone in history and produced sometimes-spectacular results over his dozen seasons from 1993-2002, including producing five All-Americans and two NCAA individual champions.
