WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - Joe Ragland scored 19 of his 31 points in the first half and Wichita State landed the 89-70 victory over No. 18 UNLV on Sunday.
Ragland, who entered the game with five 3-pointers this season, was 8 of 9 from beyond the arc for Wichita State (5-2), one off the school record for 3's in a game. Carl Hall added 17 points.
Chace Stanback had 16 points for UNLV (8-1), which handed then-No. 1 North Carolina its first loss of the season on Nov. 26. Mike Moser added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Runnin' Rebels.
UNLV went without a field for nearly 8 minutes late in the first half. With the score 18-all, a 3 by Ragland started a 9-0 run. Ragland had three more 3-pointers after that, making him 5 of 5 from the arc in the half as Wichita State took a 47-32 lead.
The Rebels were never closer than 14 points in the second half. UNLV traded baskets early in the second half. Neither team scored more than three straight points in the first four minutes. After Stanbeck hit a baseline jumper with 12:50 to play, the Rebels stilled trailed 63-48.
Not surprisingly, it was Ragland who finally gave a team some momentum. He calmly swished a kick-out 3-pointer, forcing a UNLV timeout with Wichita State leading 67-48.
But 33 seconds later, the Shockers' Toure Murry slammed a rebound for a 69-48 lead, the largest of the game.
UNLV was 5 of 20 from 3-point range and was outrebounded after entering with a 6.2-rebound advantage per game. Wichita State had 20 assists on 32 field goals.
