LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV track and field head coach Yvonne Scott was named the 2011 recipient of the Nell C. Jackson Award by the National Association for Girls & Women in Sport (NAGWS). Scott will be recognized at halftime of Saturday afternoon's women's basketball game at 3:00 pm against Colorado State in the Cox Pavilion. The day has been billed as "National Girls and Women in Sports Day".
UNLV athletics is hosting a free clinic for girls in grades 1-8 inside the Thomas & Mack Center beginning at 1:00 pm.
The award recognized the contributions of minority women who have demonstrated outstanding potential in scholarship, coaching, administration and leadership through distinguished service to girls and women's sports.
The award is named in honor of an outstanding woman of accomplishment. Jackson devoted her life to track and field competition for women, participating in the 1948 and 1951 Olympics and continuing a service to the Olympics as a coach and member of the Olympic Committee Board of Directors. This award is presented at three levels: professional, college/university and high school.
