PALM DESERT, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team shot a 5-over-par 293 in the second round and a 6-over 294 during the final round on Sunday to finish in second place at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, which was hosted by the University of Wyoming and played at the Classic Club (par 72, 7,305 yards). Play was suspended during the second round early Saturday evening because of darkness and resumed Sunday morning.
The Rebels' 54-hole total was 20-over 884, finishing five shots behind team champion Texas A&M, which shot 5-over 293 for the second round 4-over 292 in the final round to finish at 15-over 879. The second-place team finish for UNLV ties its best of the season as it also finished second at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in New Mexico in October.
SMU finished third at 26-over, UC Santa Barbara was fourth at 28-over and Denver rounded out the top five at 31-over.
UNLV sophomore Kevin Penner tied for medalist honors with Santa Clara's Scott Travers. It marked Penner's first finish inside the top 20 this year and also was the best of his career. It was his third career top-five finish as he finished third at the 2009 Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate and fifth at the 2010 John Burns Intercollegiate.
Penner shot a season-low 3-under 69 during the second round and a final-round 2-over 74 to finish at 3-under 213 for the tournament. Travers shot 70-69 in the last two rounds. Texas A&M's Conrad Shindler was third at 1-over 217.
UNLV freshman Blake Biddle and junior Derek Ernst also recorded top-10 finishes. Biddle shot 74-73 in the last two rounds to finish at 4-over 220 in a tie for seventh place, while Ernst was at 75-73 to tie for ninth at 5-over 221.
Other Rebels: senior Jeremiah Wooding (75-74) and junior Colby Smith (76-75) both finished tied for 57th at 16-over 232.
The tournament featured 20 teams and 104 individuals.
UNLV will be back in action on March 11-13 as it hosts the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters at Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas.
