Feb. 28, 2011

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV senior Tre'Von Willis was named the Mountain West Conference Co-Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday, marking his fourth career honor, first of the season and the second for a UNLV player this year. Willis shared this week's award with BYU's Jimmer Fredette.

Willis, a 6-foot-4-inch guard from Fresno, Calif., led UNLV to a 2-0 record last week with wins at New Mexico (in overtime), 77-74, on Wednesday, and vs. Wyoming, 90-77, on Saturday at the Thomas & Mack Center on Senior Night. Willis led the team in scoring with 20.0 points per game, field-goal percentage with 66.7 percent (14-of-21) and 3-point field-goal percentage with 72.7 percent (8-of-11). He also averaged 3.5 assists per game, 3.0 rebounds per game and 2.0 steals per game in 68 total minutes (34 mpg).

At New Mexico, Willis scored a season-high 25 points on 9-of-13 (.692) from the field, including 5-of-6 (.833) from 3-point range. He made both of his free-throw attempts, had four steals and four assists in 40 minutes of action. He made all five of his field-goal attempts and was 3-of-3 from 3-point range in the first half as he scored 11 of UNLV's first 14 points of the game. His fifth 3-pointer - with 14:08 left in the game - gave UNLV its largest lead of the contest - 51-36.

Against Wyoming, Willis scored 15 points in his final regular season home game on 5-of-8 from the floor (.625), including 3-of-5 (.600) from 3-point range. He also had six rebounds and three assists in 28 minutes of action. He made all three of his 3-point field-goal attempts in the first half on his way to scoring 14 points before the break, which UNLV led 54-39. It was the Runnin' Rebels' highest-scoring half of the season. He was 5-of-6 from the field in the first half.

The Runnin' Rebels (22-7, 10-5 MWC) have won eight of their last 10 games and do not have a mid-week game this week. They will be back in action on Saturday, March 5 at Utah at 1 p.m. The game will be televised live on VERSUS and may be heard live on ESPN Radio 1100 AM/98.9 FM.
