LAS VEGAS - The 68th-ranked UNLV men's tennis team rested a couple of its starters but still managed a 7-0 whitewashing of Southern Miss on Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels, who have won five of their last six matches, improved to 5-2 on the season while the Golden Eagles dropped to 1-4.
UNLV opened the day by sweeping three doubles point for one point. Johannes Markel and Bernard Schoeman won 8-5 at No. 1; Tamas Batyi and Alex Bull won 8-3 at No. 2; and Charlie Alvarado and Kasper Konyves took their match 8-2 on court three.
The Rebels did not lose a set in singles play either. Markel won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1; Batyi won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2; Schoeman won 7-6, 6-2 at No 3; Bull won 7-5, 6-1 at No. 4; Konyves won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5; and Alvarado won 6-1, 6-2 on court six.
"A good effort today across the board for us," said UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook. "Now we have to get ready to close out the weekend with a really tough match tomorrow."
UNLV is next in action on Sunday when it hosts Cal Poly beginning with doubles at 10 a.m. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
