LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 15-over-par 303 on Friday at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, which is being played at Southern Highlands Golf Club (par 72, 7,510 yards).
Texas A&M is the team leader after an 8-under 280 and leads the field by 12 shots. Arizona State is in second place at 4-over, followed by Texas, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State and California, who are all tied for third place at 6-over.
Individually, Texas A&M's Jordan Russell raced out to a five-shot lead with a round of 8-under 64. He had eight birdies on the day. Oklahoma State's Morgan Hoffmann and Texas A&M's Conrad Shindler are both tied for second at 3-under. Three golfers are tied for fourth at 2-under.
UNLV junior Derek Ernst and freshman Blake Biddle led all UNLV players on Friday with scores of 2-over 74 and are both tied for 17th. Senior Jeremiah Wooding is tied for 44th after a 5-over 77 and junior Colby Smith is tied for 56th after a 6-over 78. Sophomore Kevin Penner was 1-under through four holes, but withdrew because of illness.
Three UNLV golfers competed as individuals only: sophomore Arthur Kim was 5-over 77 and is tied for 44th, freshman Nicholas Maruri was 9-over 81 and is tied for 70th, and freshman Max Kraemer was 17-over 89 and is in 77th.
The 15-team, 80-individual tournament features 11 of the nation's top-30 teams according to the GolfStat rankings. The tournament will continue on Saturday and conclude Sunday with 18 holes each day starting at 8 a.m. The public is welcome to attend the tournament and admission is free.
