DENVER (UNLVRebes.com) - The 44th-ranked UNLV men's tennis team just missed upsetting No. 32 Nebraska in a 4-3 neutral-site loss on Saturday at the Stapleton Tennis Center.
Playing an early match after a late-night win on Friday, UNLV dropped to 11-6 while the Cornhuskers improved to 8-4.
With the team splitting the six singles matches, doubles was the key and Nebraska eked out the team point to begin the day, winning two matches 9-8 after prevailing in tiebreakers.
UNLV got three wins from the meat of its lineup but couldn't find a fourth point. Winning for the Rebels was Tamas Batyi, 6-0, 6-3 at the third spot over 123rd-ranked Benedikt Lindheim; Rene Ruegamer, 6-4, 7-5, 1-0 (13-11) at No. 4 over Andre Stenger; and Alex Bull, 6-3, 6-1 over Tom Blackwell on court five.
The Huskers took the showdown at the top of the lineup as 110th-ranked Christoper Aumueller upset 66th-ranked Mehdi Bouras 6-2, 6-2 to snap the senior leader's eight-match winning streak.
"Doubles was the difference. The guys competed hard but Nebraska was just a little too good for us today," UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "Overall, this was a good trip in preparing for our conference-opening match in this same state and elevation next weekend."
Next up, the Rebels will head to Colorado Springs for their Mountain West Conference opener vs. Air Force on Thursday.
