PROVO, Utah (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 8-under-par 280 and a second-round 3-under 285 on Friday at the PING Cougar Classic, which is being played at Riverside Country Club (par 72, 7,142 yards). The 8-under round by the Rebels marked a season low.
UNLV is 11-under 565 after 36 holes and leads the field by seven shots. Colorado State and Pacific are both in second place, at 4-under 572. UC Davis and Washington State round out the top five - in a tie for fourth place - at 1-under 575. The tournament features 18 teams and 96 individuals.
Rebel sophomore Kevin Penner is the tournament's individual leader at 9-under 135 after rounds of 67 and 68. He leads the tournament by two shots over Pacific's Alex Edfort, who is 7-under. Two other Rebels are in the top 10: freshman Blake Biddle is tied for fourth at 4-under 140 after rounds of 68 and 72, and junior Derek Ernst is tied for seventh at 3-under 141 after rounds of 70 and 71.
Other Rebel individuals: junior Colby Smith is tied for 72nd at 8-over after rounds of 78 and 74, and sophomore Arthur Kim is tied for 84th at 10-over after a 75 and 79. The tournament will conclude with 18 holes on Saturday. Live scoring is being provided by Golfstat with a link at UNLVRebels.com.
